15 World Cup-inspired cocktails that you absolutely need to try

It only happens once every four years yet the whole country can’t help but get excited. And you can bet that we’ve got football fever too over here at Masons. To help celebrate the 2018 World Cup in Russia, our talented bar staff have rounded up the signature cocktails from the biggest names in the tournament in a handy place for you.

1. Russia

Name: The Moscow Mule
Ingredients: 4 oz Ginger Beer, 1 ½ oz vodka, ⅙ oz lime juice
Description: A Masons ‘Old Fashioned’ but with a modern twist you’ll love. The deep flavours of the Ginger Beer and the burn of the vodka is balanced perfectly with a dash of lime juice.

2. Spain

Name: Tinto de Verano
Ingredients: 1 part Gaseosa (or a mixture of Sprite and water, or Fanta), 1 part red wine
Description: Also known as “the red wine of summer”, Tinto de Verano is a Sangria-like drink that’ll keep you cool and refreshed on a hot summer night. It’s a twist on a classic glass of vino.

3. France

Name: French 75
Ingredients: 2 oz champagne, 1/2 oz lemon juice, 1 oz gin, 2 dashes of simple syrup
Description: If there was any drink that is best served ice cold, it’s the French 75. It’s a fantastic drink to have with a serving of bacon, eggs and pancakes, so if you’ve got a French match to watch in the late morning, why not enjoy over brunch?

4. Brazil

Name: Caipirinha
Ingredients: Half a lime cut into 4 wedges, 2 teaspoons brown sugar, 1 2/3 oz cachaça
Description: As soon as you take a sip of a Caipirinha, you’ll be immediately jetted off to a sandy beach in Rio. Light, refreshing and with a similar tang to a margarita, it’s the perfect drink to enjoy at a BBQ celebrating a World Cup win.

5. England

Name: Gimlet
Ingredients: One part sweetened lime juice, four parts gin
Description: A classic British cocktail with a simple recipe to match. It doesn’t get more refreshing than this.

6. Japan

Name: Japanese Old Fashioned
Ingredients: 1 ½ oz Japanese whiskey, 2 dashes Angostura bitters,15ml Lychie syrup, 1 sugar cube, a few dashes of plain water
Description: Take a classic Old Fashioned, and add a healthy dash of spice that’ll certainly put some hair on your chest.

7. Portugal

Name: Caipirao
Ingredients: Half a lime cut into 4 wedges, 2 teaspoons brown sugar, 1 ⅔ oz Liqueur Beirao
Description: An incredibly easy recipe to put together, the only problem with the Caipirao is very very moreish, so you’ll constantly be asking for a refill. Trust us.

8. Peru

Name: Pisco Sour
Ingredients: 1 oz lemon juice, 1 egg white, 1 ½ oz Pisco, ¾ oz simple syrup
Description: Sharp, spicy and a little bit bitter, the Pisco Sour is a South American classic. It even has its own annual holiday. We’re sure you’ll love it.

9. Costa Rica

Name: Jaguar Colada
Ingredients: Coconut milk, passion fruit syrup, lime juice, rum
Description: A true Costa Rican cocktail, the rum cuts through this one sharply. But it’s fun, frozen and incredibly fruity to boot.

10. Germany

Name: Gin Basil Smash
Ingredients: 2 oz gin, 1 oz fresh lemon juice, ⅔ ounce simple syrup, 10 small basil leaves, basil sprig for garnish
Description: The perfect aperitif to an afternoon outdoors. Why not throw a little garden party to watch a match and serve this incredibly herby yet refreshing drink for your guests to enjoy?

11. Poland

Name: Polish Martini
Ingredients: 25ml Ketel, 25ml vodka, 25ml Krupnik honey liqueur, 25ml pressed apple juice
Description: It doesn’t matter whether you like it shaken or stirred, by the time you’ve tasted the sweet tang of the Polish Martini, you simply won’t care anymore.

12. Morocco

Name: Moroccopolitan
Ingredients: 4 drops of ‘The Bitter End’ Moroccan Bitters, 2 oz pomegranate-infused vodka, ¾ oz honey syrup, ½ oz lemon juice
Description: Don’t be fooled by the pomegranate in the ingredients. All it takes is a few drops of spicy Moroccan bitters to add a little heat.

13. Denmark

Name: The Danish Fly
Ingredients: 1 oz Aquavit, 1 oz banana liqueur, 1 oz fresh lemon juice, ½ oz Grenadine
Description: Not the most well-known of cocktails but certainly not one to disappoint. The Danish Fly may be unusual, but it is certainly satisfying and thirst-quenching.

14. Mexico

Name: Margarita
Ingredients: 2 oz tequila, 1 oz lime juice, 1 oz Cointreau
Description: Sometimes you just can’t beat a classic, and a margarita is no exception. The tang of the tequila, the sweetness of the lime juice… And we’ll take ours with extra salt, please.

15. Belgium

Name: Black Russian
Ingredients: ⅔ oz coffee liqueur, 1 ⅔ oz Vodka
Description: The older brother of the White Russian who certainly packs a punch. Incredibly easy to concote, and impossible to mistake.
